INDIGENOUS/NIHB

Indigenous & NIHB-Funded Clients

I offer psychotherapy services to Indigenous clients, including those eligible for coverage through the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program. My work with Indigenous clients is informed by both professional experience and a personal connection to Indigenous heritage within my family. Growing up, this heritage was a source of reflection and complexity, and working with Indigenous clients continues to shape my development as a therapist.

I also served for over 1.5 years as a mental health therapist in a fly-in Indigenous community in northern Labrador, where I worked with clients of all ages, facilitated group discussions, chaired sharing circles, and supported the local health-care team. That experience deepened my understanding of intergenerational trauma, community stressors, and the broader historical and social contexts affecting Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Therapy is offered in a way that is respectful, collaborative, and paced. My role is not to impose a framework, but to provide a steady space where your experiences, values, and perspectives are honoured. All services are provided virtually using a secure, encrypted platform designed for healthcare practitioners.

Areas Commonly Addressed

Indigenous clients may seek therapy for many reasons, including:

  • Stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm
  • Impacts of intergenerational or historical trauma
  • Relationship and family concerns
  • Grief, loss, and life transitions
  • Identity questions or cultural disconnection
  • Workplace stress or burnout
  • Anger, emotional reactivity, or conflict patterns
  • Coping with chronic health conditions or pain

You do not need to have a specific diagnosis or crisis to seek support.

What to Expect in Therapy

Early sessions focus on understanding what brings you in and what feels most important to address right now. We move at a pace that feels manageable and respectful, with attention to emotional safety and clarity. Therapy may involve conversation, reflection, practical strategies, or experiential approaches, depending on what feels helpful to you.

My approach is trauma-informed, client-centred, and culturally respectful. While I draw from evidence-based psychotherapy methods, I remain attentive to the broader context shaping your experiences and avoid pathologizing or reducing concerns to symptoms alone.

The goal of therapy is not to “fix” you, but to support understanding, resilience, and a greater sense of agency and balance over time.

NIHB Coverage & Access

I am registered to provide services to NIHB-eligible clients.

  • Direct billing is available through NIHB, so approved clients do not need to pay up front.
  • No physician referral is required for psychotherapy services under NIHB.
  • Sessions are provided virtually using a secure, confidential platform.

If you are unsure about eligibility or how NIHB coverage works, I’m happy to discuss this during a brief consultation.

Scope Clarification

This page describes areas of focus, not diagnoses or guarantees of outcome. If your needs fall outside my scope of practice, I will support you in identifying appropriate next steps or referrals.
